Yesterday at work, as I was building a brain-numbing spreadsheet, the building began to rock back and forth. It only lasted fifteen or twenty seconds, and was only a gentle rocking. I thought at first it was a weird vertigo thing in my head, but then the guy sitting behind me said, “Hey, did you feel that?”
Twitter lit up immediately, and I was amazed at how quickly news is communicated by tweet. People in the UK heard the news before it showed up on television here in the States. We have perpetual CNN/FOX/Al Jazeera running on the wall-mounted TV monitor in our work area, and reports of people feeling the tremor started rolling in from places all along the U.S. East Coast, from New York to Georgia. The most timely and personal reports by far came from Twitter. From now on, no matter what the event, I know where to get my initial news reporting–from regular people with eyes on.
