The University of Florida’s (my alma mater) alumni magazine, FLORIDA, just ran a page in its fall 2010 issue remembering the 1990 murders of five students in Gainesville. The short piece and accompanying photos took me back to that unsettling time. Here’s what I sent to the editor:
The Fall 2010 issue’s Back in Time page, “We Remember,” struck me like a bolt of lightning from the past. I’m astounded at how quickly twenty years can pass, yet how vivid my memories are of the shock and fear the tragic murders of 1990 inflicted on all of us. I remember Gainesville heaving a collective gasp and wavering on its feet from the tremendous moral blow. Though no one felt safe, everyone supported one another. I commend those who continue to honor the victims. The dedicated oaks by Smathers Library are beautiful. I hope to return from overseas to visit them soon.
